Police should treat cyclists the same way as other vehicle operators. Police officers in North America often ignore bicyclists who flagrantly violate the rules of the road, such as by riding facing traffic. At the same time, some police stop bicyclists who are riding lawfully. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued training materials for police officers concerning bicycling laws. You can see the training material (please disable pop-up blockers).
Police rightly should ignore cyclists’ violations of vehicle traffic laws, because they are not vehicles. They are sports equipment. A slightly faster moving pedestrian. That have an absolute right to do whatever they want to get their exercise and stay away from cars. That includes sidewalk useage, and not waiting in the middle of the road at a red light.
Brr is obviously expressing a common opinion, but not one which has any basis in traffic law, which defines bicyclists as drivers of vehicles and requires them to follow the rules of the road. See the Guide to Improving Laws.
